Christmas Eve, 9:30am:
Driving to the gym, anticipating sweat and fatigue, I was distracted by a rainbow around the sun, faint though it was. A halo. I don't believe in such things. Within minutes I was distracted by the corpse of a raccoon on the side of the road. Later in the day I would see 2 squirrels dead on the sides of roads.

I thought about what to buy for a dying woman. I thought about a man with dysentery and wondered if he was still afflicted. I thought about pumpkin pies and tanning lotions. I thought about guilt and sorrow.

The beauty of nature and the horror of nature revealed itself to me simultaneously, a weight on my "heart". The living and the dead, the barely living and the soon-to-be dead haunted me on Rt. 73 at 9:30am on Christmas Eve.

I ran for 4 miles and forgot about it all.
