Rampage Planning

Rampage Planning

OK I admit, I am not taking my duties as planner of the

Diaryland Orgy
and
Murderous Rampage

very seriously. I'm also counting on the fact that I have a couple months to think about this. Anyway, I was looking at City Search to find some information on good dive bars in NYC. In the top 10 listing I found a few possibilities. Two of them are in the Village (which I am familiar with) and one is midtown at E. 60th Street (which I am not familiar with).

Subway Inn sounds interesting.

It is described as having a collection of "the worst amateur art known to man and rows of filthy, inexplicable tchotchkes". Plus it's incredibly dusty and the bathrooms are filthy. If you are a tourist, they might even eat you alive. Ya can't beat that.

McSorley's is a Greenwich Village institution.

It is one of the oldest bars in NYC and gets really packed on Saint Patrick's Day. When I lived in the city, I live right down the block from this place. Strangely enough I never went there. I think we didn't go because we regarded it as sort of a touristy place and a frat boy place. I imagine the atmosphere is one of a middle of the road crowd. Not too tough. Unfortunately, they only serve their own beer (light or dark).

When I lived in NYC we spent a lot of time hanging out at The Village Idiot.

That was over 10 years ago and the location is different now. I have no idea how much the place has changed but I can tell you what it was like when I used to go. The crowd was very mixed with middle of the road college kids and young punk rock kids and older regulars who looked like they were permanent fixtures. The only thing on the jukebox was country, but mostly older, good country like Johnny Cash and David Allen Coe and Dolly Parton and Hank Williams, Jr. We knew all the words and it was fun to be in a completely packed dirty little bar singing "Jolene" with everyone in there. Oh, and Tommy was the best bartender ever. He'd be so drunk that sometimes he'd forget to charge you, especially if you were a young lady and let him kiss (i.e. slobber all over) the back of your hand. I believe he still owns the place.

Anx recommends the Ace Bar which is also in the East Village.

The big draws for this place seem to be the large collection of lunchboxes, the dart board and the pinball games. Seems to me that the East Village has the most dive bars...

So that's all I got so far. What do you all think? Leave a message in the Guestbook.
