My Dying Relatives Trump Dead Strangers

My Dying Relatives Trump Dead Strangers

The events of 9/11/01 hardly affected me at all. I'm sure it has a lot to do with my callous nature, but oh well.

In work they are forcing patriotism on us – little memorial pins, car flags, mandatory moments of silence. I don't really appreciate this. It's like having a state religion or something.

The world is a terrible place and people are inherently bad. The attacks are just a reminder of this.

Yes, it is true; I have little room in my shriveled black pea-sized heart to mourn anyone who died as a result of the attacks. To me, the deaths of strangers are always the same, and mean little to me. Certainly my tune would be different if I had had deep meaningful relationships with any of those dead people. I'm not denying that. But as I said, the deaths of strangers mean little to me, whether the death was a result of a terrorist attack or famine or civil war or a car accident or a heart attack, etc.

The events happing in my own life, with people I have long-standing personal relationships, actually eclipse the events of 9/11/01 for me. I have other things to worry about, things that are bad, really bad, in my own life.

If you want to mourn for people you hardly know (or don't even know), mourn for me and my friends and family when the time comes. Create holidays to commemorate the people in my life who have met (or will meet) their deaths in my life time, perhaps even in the next year.

As for all this sentimentality about 9/11/01, not everybody feels heartbroken about these events. In fact there is a great article at Salon.com that I suggest you read (and the follow-up article). I am not the only one who has something unpopular to say about the events of 9/11/01. Everybody get on with your lives.

If you'd really like to get on with your life, you should join us in NYC in November for the
